Please inform US Customs and Immigration that you will be residing at:
South Campus Residence Hall
6031 South Ellis Avenue
Chicago, IL 60637
We strongly suggest that you take a taxi cab to campus as the distance from O'Hare to the University of Chicago is quite substantial. The best option would be to gather a small group and share a cab to campus. The cost of a cab should be about $75.00.
If you would like to arrange for a seat on a shuttle, Airport Express has small busses that run from the airport to campus. You must book for a seat on the shuttle in advance for them to deliver you to the South Campus Residence Hall, and you will obtain information on where and when to find the bus from Airport Express.
To reach the University of Chicago from O'Hare International Airport by public transportation, take the "Blue Line" subway to downtown Chicago (also known as the "Loop"). Get off at the Clark/Lake stop, walk one block south to Randolph Street and then, walk four blocks east to the Randolph St. Metra Station. Take the Metra Electric southbound until you get to the 60th St. stop. Walk west, toward campus, along the length of the Midway Plaisance until you reach Ellis Ave. At Ellis Ave., turn left, past 60th St. to reach South Campus Residence Hall. (N.B.: Do not take the "Red" or "Green" line trains south of downtown).
Upon arrival you'll need to check in at the Dorm. You will be given a photo ID which is your key to the dormitory, libraries, your room, and breakfast each morning (beginning July 7). The photo ID you received from the South Campus Residence may be used to enter the library. While in the library you may access the electronic resources. You will also be given a messenger bag with the schedule, printed syllabi, and other materials, including a campus map.
You will be provided with sheets and towels when you arrive. They will be replaced once a week. If you wish replacements sooner, you may take your dirty linens to the front desk and pick up new ones.
The dorms do not have hotel-like amenities—you will need to bring your own toiletries, shampoo, hair dryer and any other grooming tools you use. There are tiny bars of soap—you may want to bring your own from home.
No alcoholic beverages of any kind are allowed in any of the public areas of the dorm. There are no exceptions to this rule. Other groups, some with younger students, may also be using the dorm housing over the summer. Open bottles of beverages with alcohol are not allowed in public outdoor areas in Chicago. Chicago is a nonsmoking city and it is enforced. Smoking is not allowed in any public building (school, dorm, hotel, restaurant, museum) and is discouraged elsewhere.
